I have read many things that seem to say that oatmeal is GF but I have also read a few things that say that it is not.  Those of you who are on the diet, do you use oatmeal or do many of you avoid it?  If you have used it have you noticed any changes with it?  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

So, should I assume that no one on the GFCF diet gives their kids oatmeal?  I guess for now I'll stick with no oatmeal until I get more info.  If anyone who has not read this have an answer I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks for reading!

No, Oats have gluten in them, so you would not use them on a GF diet. But you can get gluten free oats. Not sure how that works as we don't eat them here.

I must have missed this one.  Probably most doing the GFCF/SF diet for ASD diagnoses  would say no to oats.

We follow a more celiac style approach to GFCF and do allow oats (in small quantities... from processing plants that don't cross contaminate).  We also allow corn and soy.  I suppose it just depends on which GFCF diet plan you follow; and whether you have documented sensitivities/allergies to certain grains.  The only grains our kiddos have documented issues with are wheat and wheat related items (barley, rye, triticale, amaranth).

Yes you can buy oats/ oatmeal that is not contaminated by wheat if you are on a wheat free diet but is unsuitablle fo a guten free diet as oats still contain gluten. Have you tried rice porrige as a subsitute for oatmeal, made from rice flakes?

FYI... corn has gluten also... but its the type of gluten that's important, not just whether or not a grain contains any gluten... so again, its back to which GFCF diet are you wanting to follow...

Cornmeal and oatmeal usually contain gluten, but I believe it is because of the amount of wheat that is included in the product.  As long as the oats are grown in a farm that does not also grow wheat, processed in a plant that does not also process wheat, and so on, then oats can be made gluten free enough for a celiac to eat them.   try http://www.glutenfreeoats.com/

Thanks, I actually did see a brand in my health food store that said gluten free.  I was thrown off guard because I had just believed that oats had the gluten that affected celiacs.  But, I am not going to push it since he does like the rice cereal.  Thank you all for your advice.

I'm looking right now at a package of Bob's Red Mill whole grain rolled oats, wheat free and gluten free. Sonia, was that the one you saw?

I always thought corn was safe if the child didn't show an intolerance to it, but had a gluten intolerance.  Oh man.....
