My son has Aspergers & all he eats is grilled cheese (has to have processed cheese or he wont eat it), chicken nuggets (ONLY from McDonalds--we have even tried saving the boxes and putting nuggets we make at home in it--doesnt work), fries, fish sticks, and almost all fruit. We are planning a trip to Disney World again and this time we want him to eat more food. Is there ANY ADVICE on how to get him to eat a more diverse variety??? We have tried starving him but he just wont take the bait!

wow...that is the exact diet my daughter used to eat....to the tee..She is almost 2. and dx'd pdd..she was stimming, flapping hands, shaking head, addicted to only certain foods and I was desperate to help her so I decided to try gfcf.  At first I just gave her alot of fruit and soup with rice pasta because she liked soup too.  Another big food I was able to give to her as a replacement for the chicken nuggets was bell and evans gluten free chick. nuggets.  Maybe give those a try.  she is still a picky eater but since starting the gfcf diet (about a month and half now) she has expanded her food repertoire for sure and is more willing to try things...hope this helps...i know how frustrating it is..

We had major issues with restrictive eating patterns and carb loading before switching to a gfcf diet.  We make exceptions to the diet when travelling, tho.  While travelling we bend to their preferences just to get them to eat enough to have the energy to keep going, keep up their supplements, and hope for the best.

We feel that the most important thing is to avoid it becoming a power struggle, so humor and praise have been our main way of dealing with it.

It looks like your son is only eating finger food -- is that correct?  If so, there might be an issue with utensils, for example the sound they make or the way they feel in the mouth.  Some people have better success with plastic utensils.

Here's a collection of links related to picky eaters on the autism spectrum.  You'll find lots of good tips there:

I had to check the name to make sure the post didn't come from my wife.  Our son refuses to eat veggies, or anything that we might have snuck a veggie into.  We used to sneak veggies into the muffins, but he is getting wise to that.

He will eat fruit, and he will eat the gluten free waffles if we cover them in peanut butter, so that is breakfast.  You an also make the waffles using the gluten free flour if you have a waffle iron.  This also allows you to sneak some veggies into breakfast.

He eats Kix cereal, and sometimes he eats the coconut free yogurt, so that is snacktime.  If he is hungry, he will eat a rice cake with cream cheese on it.

Applegate farms sells a dye-free hotdog, and he will eat it with sweet potato fries or mashed potato, so that is lunch.

for dinner, we are out of ideas.  We usually give him the gluten free pizza, but it has cheese.  Lately, he doesn't eat those either because of the veggies, so dinner is back to fruit.

We would love to hear some ideas.  Our son will not eat soup or rice, and now he won't eat baby food either.  He was actually close to weaning himselt (he is 19 months old) but he has removed so much other food from his diet that if it were not for nursing, he would be losing weight.
