Hi,

I recently saw my dentist, who reminded me of the importance of fluoride for my 3 y/o son (PDD). I used to give him the mvi's with fluoride which was prescribed by my ped, but because he had such a bad reaction to the dye in it, I stopped giving it to him a while ago. He now takes a basic Kirkman one which has no fluoride. I am really worried about his dental health and not sure what to do-it's still too early to brush his teeth w/ regular toothpaste. I know there is something called Nursery Water, but it was very controversial and I'm not even sure if it's still out there. Any suggestions?

Thanks again..

Fluoride is neither a nutrient nor required for healthy teeth. It is a drug with side effects - just like any other drug (See: http://www.FluorideAction.Net/health)

Children’s cavity rates are similar whether water is fluoridated or not, according to data published in the July 2009 Journal of the American Dental Association by dentist J.V. Kumar of the NY State Health Department

"There is weak and inconsistent evidence that the use of fluoride supplements prevents dental caries [cavities] in primary teeth," according to a systematic review of fluoride supplement research published in the November 2008 Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA).

The authors could find only one study, from China, showing any fluoride cavity-preventing benefit to primary teeth and that study was probably biased with a high withdrawal rate, the authors write.

Mild -to-moderate dental fluorosis (white spotted and/or yellow teeth) is a significant fluoride supplement side effect, they report.

Fluoride supplements, although a prescription drug, were never FDA [Food and Drug Administration] tested for safety or effectiveness because sodium fluoride was on the market pre-1938 before FDA testing laws were enacted.

Also, a substantial amount of fluoride is ingested from brushing with fluoridated toothpaste.

Good diets create good teeth along with regular dental check-ups to fill any cavities when they are small

Are you in the United States?  Here in Norway the water is not fluoridated, and kids (as well as adults) get chewable fluoride tablets.  It has never been a problem to get my kids to take them, even though they're picky eaters (especially my youngest).

I'd talk to the dentist again about an appropriate toothpaste for kids -- I assume you feel he's too young because he can't spit/rinse and ends up swallowing toothpaste.

Here's a link to a collection of links related to autism and dental health, including kid stuff to help kids learn about the importance of brushing, etc.

I'm in the U.S.

I personally avoid all obvious fluoride sources as it isn't required for sound teeth.  It's actually a drug that hardens the outer enamel of teeth.  However, some dentists say it doesn't prevent tooth decay; but hides it.  They call it "fluoride bombs" because upon probling otherwise healthy teeth, they "explode" open revealing hidden decay below the surface.

Whether to take fluoride or not is a personal decision.

However, putting it into the water supplies takes away one's freedom to choose.(you are lucky they don't in Norway)

Also, there's no dispute that too much fluoride is a bad thing.  And the fluoridated water supplies makes its way into the food chain - overdosing too many american children causing dental fluorosis.

Brushing with fluoridated toothpaste also allows fluoride to get into the bloodstream through involuntary swalling and absorption via the mouth membranes.

There have been several studies from China and India and a couple from the US showing that fluoride can alter brain activity.

We avoid flouride altogether. Our DAN told us to, and I had heard it was not great even before we started biomedical treatements.  We filter our drinking water, buy flouride free toothpastes and refuse it at the dentist.
