For what it is worth here is my story...First though I would like to say that I personally met Levi's Mom at a Monthly Autism Support group meeting.  She is the real deal....as honest and excited about her experience with how HIT has helped her son as she has portrayed.  When she was telling me, face to face, the story about her frustrations with finding professionals who understood what was going on with her son and also frustrations with trying to find the best way to help him I actually felt like it was me talking in the mirror.

A couple of weeks ago I met a Mom who told me about a book called Disconnected Kids.  This Mom also has a son like mine.  My son has never been diagnosed with Autism but has a host of issues that no one can explain why they happened or what it all means.  Perfect pregnancy and planned c-section birth with perfect Apgars.  Kinda hard to find help for someone who has something when you don't know what it is.  Anyhow, I read this book in 2 days..could not put it down.  It discusses the theory that disorders like Autism, Aspbergers, ADD, ADHD and even tourettes....occur because there is a part of the brain that is immature and when the left and right sides of the brain are working together to accomplish something..the immature part holds the brain back.  The outcome comes out in the form of these disorders.  There is an actual medical term that describes this called Functional Disconnection Syndrome.

Did you ever ask the question....why is there so much Austism, ADD, ADHD, etc. today than there was when I was growing up.  Is it because it always existed and now it is just being diagnosed?  OR Is there something environmental going on that has changed to bring about all of this.  Every neurologist I have taken my son to has told me it has always been there..just now being diagnosed.  However, what has always plagued me is my memory of my childhood.  I truly never knew of anyone I went to school with or any of their siblings that had what I see as now as Austism...yes there were some hyper kids...maybe some that had a hard time concentrating.  The book does a good job of laying out the statistics of then and now with studies to back it up.

Most importantly the book discusses...what do you do now.  The great news is that the brain is pliable.  You can actually determine through non invasive testing where the break down is and then exercise that part of the brain so that it can communicate with the rest of the brain on an equal level...get rid of the breakdown in communication so to speak.  This is Hemispheric Integration Therapy.

After reading the book I googled..Functional Disconnection Sydrome in Tampa.  The only name that came up was Dr. Mane.  There on his website I found the link to "Autism Support Squad"....I saw their next meeting happen to be that coming Thurs. and decided I would go.  Wanted to meet Dr. Mane..wanted to get a feel. Is this for real or voo doo medicine.  I had become quite skeptical over the years in doing research for my son.  There I met several moms..including Levi's.  That is what I needed to be a believer that I need to try this.  My son just had his evaluation yesterday and he starts next week.  HIT is not inexpensive...but I look at it as an investment.  My goal and as I understand it..it is attainable...is to mainstream my child...not have to take him to OT, ST and to be able to stop the ADD meds.  I truly believe we will get there.  As Dr. Mane said to me yesterday..the nice thing is that there is an end to this therapy.  It is not like OT and ST...which my son has been participating in since he could walk.

I know my story is long but I wanted to share.  I will keep you all posted of the progress my son makes.  Part of me still feels, "I will believe it when I see it"..however, I am enough of a believer after talking to so many parents that have had great experiences that I am willing to take a chance and make the investment.

Will keep you posted!

This is one that's actually been around a while, but now as a new name.  For those who have been working with ASD issues a while, this particular kind of therapy is Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Hi,

I liked the book called "Disconnected Kids" by Robert Melillo, but where do I find a dr. in our area?

If anyone knows how to find a Dr., ect... who knows about this therapy and IS IN THE MIDWEST, please let me know.  I think there is an O/T that is in the know, but we have yet to get our eval. with her in a few weeks.

Theresa

Hi Theresa,

I just Googled Functional Disconnection Sydrome in my area and the Doctors name came up.  I am going to see him tomorrow and would be happy to ask him..he may know of someone.  Can you tell me where exactly in the Midwest you are?

I will keep you posted on the progress.
