Hi Everyone!

My name is Dan, and I'm the father of a 4-year-old boy with autism.

My "introduction" to the community can be found here:

http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1925& ;PN=1&TPN=174

I'd like to tell everyone about a tool my wife and I have developed to help kids with autism and their caregivers. As a parent of a special needs child, I am VERY sensitive to being exploited and want to respect any rules set forth by the moderators of these boards about advertising. If telling you about our little invention violates the rules of this forum or otherwise makes anyone upset, I would totally understand the need to remove this post.

Anyway, my wife Carey and I were turned on to picture-based communication aids by the Connecticut "Birth to Three" system. We used magnet boards, laminated/Velcro strips, etc. with Evan, and they worked! Evan is verbal, but picture schedules really helped to reduce his anxiety and empower him to make transitions from one activity to the next.

Where Carey and I got frustrated was trying to travel and move around with the tools available. Carrying around big notebooks was an inconvenience. We'd lose them. We wouldn't have the right one available at the right time. Moreover, it's amazing the attention you get at Burger King when you're showing big strips of pictures to your son! :(

Our solution was to put a picture-based communications tool on the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's called iPrompts. I won't hog up space on this board evangelically proclaiming its benefits, as I don't think that's really fair to everyone (as badly as I might want to do it!). Check out the website if it sounds interesting (we've got screenshots, a video tutorial, and some video testimony from a little field trial we ran with parents and professionals). And, of course, I'd be happy to answer questions.

Thanks so much for your time!!

I've read about another program in USA Today, and here in Norway they're doing a study on Asperger teens using the iPhone as an assistive device.  Brilliant and creative use of a common gadget.  I wish you luck in your endeavour.

We just picked up proloque2.0, also an apple app.  I believe it's the same program NorwayMom is talking about.

We're very happy with what we picked, but am happy to see there is more than one option available out there.

The app we use on the itouch (also available for iphone) is called proloque2.0, and it is entirely PECS based.  It comes with 7000 different pictures, and you can add and customize many more pictures.  There is also a text to speech function, which we love.

Basically these apps are a way to make PECS portable, and much more functional.  It's much easier to carry the itouch, than a binder, or a communicator.

Please remember I'm talking about a different app than the original poster, but I believe it is a similar app.  We just happened to choose the different product.

IF my little boy would talk on a phone without prompting, we would buy him a phone company. When Verizon gets the I Phone, we will have them.
He is receiving phone calls from girls in his first grade class but he isn't the greatest conversationalist without eye contact [YES, It does come eventually].
Our life is pretty cool compared to 4 years ago.

Dan, we will look into your cool product, it seems really worthwhile. Good Luck to you and your family.
