I thought I'd gather all my online resource connected with puberty in one place.   Let me know if you discover any broken links or if have any other good online resources to add:

General:

1)  Here's a good manual created for those who work with Deaf-Blind kids, who also have learning issues and perseverative behaviors similar to autistic kids.  It's called "Introduction to sexuality education for individuals who are deaf-blind and significantly developmentally delayed" by Kate Moss and Robbie Blaha.

http://www.nationaldb.org/documents/products/sex-ed.pdf

You can jump right to the most interesting chapters, which each end with guidelines for instruction and intervention (ie a list of concepts to learn, easy activities for instruction, and troubleshooting tips).

Chapter 4 - Modesty
Chapter 5 - Appropriate Touch and Personal Boundaries
Chapter 6 - Menstruation
Chapter 7 - Masturbation
Chapter 8 - Sexual Health Care
Chapter 9 - Sexual Abuse

2)  The AAPC newsletter has an issue with adolescence as the theme.  One of the articles (page 9) mentioned asking a trusted teacher, minister, pediatrician, or other supportive person to have THE TALK.  The author said it is more common than you think for parents to request this kind of help.  She gave other practical guidelines.

http://www.asperger.net/newsletter_Fall2006.pdf

3)  This website had two lists of resources and links:

http://www.pent.ca.gov/05PosEnvInt/dIndividual/sexedu.doc

http://www.pent.ca.gov/05PosEnvInt/dIndividual/adolescencesu pports.doc

3)  The Fall 2006 issue of the AAPC newsletter had adolescence as its theme:

http://www.asperger.net/newsletter_Fall2006.pdf

4)  This issue of Keynotes, an Australian newsletter devoted to autism, has puberty as its theme:

http://www.aspect.org.au/publications/ksummer07/ksummer07_18 24.pdf

5) http://www.marshall.edu/coe/atc/Newsletter/ATC%20Newsletter% 20-%20Spr-Sum%202006.pdf - "Puberty and ASD:  You Can Run but You Can't Hide"

http://www.disabilitysolutions.org/newsletters/files/four/4- 5.pdf - part 1, Disability Solutions issue on sexuality education.

http://www.disabilitysolutions.org/pdf/4-6.pdf - part 2, Disability Solutions issue on sexuality education.  Good tip that Planned Parenthood may have experience/interest in training the developmentally disabled.

http://www.visualaidsforlearning.com/adolescent-pack-learnin g.htm - this website has visual tools for teaching about various themes.

Menstruation/Puberty in Girls

1)  See Chapter 6 in the above-mentioned manual for Deaf-Blind kids.

http://www.tr.wou.edu/dblink/pdf/sex-ed.pdf

2)  Here is a 2 page social story about menstruation.  It is nice and simple and has cheerful visuals (clip art).  Here's the link to each page.

http://www.tinsnips.org/Media/social/menstruation1.pdf

http://www.tinsnips.org/Media/social/menstruation2.pdf

3)  An article with lots of good tips and a list of books (members of this forum recommend the American Girl one).

http://www.isdd.indiana.edu/irca/Medical/Puberty.html

4)  An article plus Macromedia Flash diagram.  The diagram is semi-animated, with roll-over text plus audio.  It explains/shows external and internal anatomy and what happens at various times in the cycle.  Here's the link:

http://kidshealth.org/teen/sexual_health/girls/menstruation. html

5)  Menstruation was discussed at length on our forum a couple months ago.  Here's the link to that discussion:

http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13838&am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;KW=menstruation

6)  "Menstruation and Mental Disability", includes an overview of medical options.

http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/HealthAZ/Menstruation-and-Me nt al-Disability-Advice-for-Parents-of-Adolescent-Girls.asp x?ar ticleID=9874&categoryID =

7)  "Girls with autism face the challenge of womanhood"  http://www.autisable.com/708246569/girls-with-autism-face-th e-challenges-of-womanhood/

8)  "The Recognition and management of symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle in women with autism" by Dr. Margaret Kyrkou

http://www.autismo-br.com.br/home/Artig091.htm

Sexuality:

http://www.sexsupport.org/AutismResources.html - links related to autism and sexuality.

http://www.sexualityandu.ca/teachers/tools-10-1.aspx - sex education for youth with intellectual disabilities.

http://www.autismuk.com/index9sub1.htm - TEACCH

http://www.autismtoday.com/puberty.htm - a short article is called "Puberty and the Wakening of Sexuality" and is by Janice Adams, an autism mom and book author ("More Creative Ideas, From age eight to early adulthood").

http://www.autism.org.sg/public_html/html/publications/junne ws2003_rev.pdf - includes visual aids about preventing abuse and a social story about wet dreams in comic strip form.

Masturbation:

http://www.tr.wou.edu/dblink/pdf/sex-ed.pdf - see Chapter 7 in the manual for Deaf-Blind kids (described at the top of this post).

http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/irca/Medical/Mword.html - an article from the Indiana Resource Center for Autism.

Social Stories (some are listed both here and in above categories)

http://www.thegraycenter.org/social-stories/how-to-write-soc ial-stories - from Carol Gray, the creator of Social Stories.  Includes a long one about personal space and private body parts.

http://www.tinsnips.org/Pages/socialskills.html - one about menstruation and another about deodorant

http://www.autism.org.sg/public_html/html/publications/junne ws2003_rev.pdf - social story about wet dreams in comic strip form.

http://www.pent.ca.gov/05PosEnvInt/dIndividual/teensocstory. pdf - written for a girl who needed to learn to set boundaries for who could kiss her.

I added a new resource to the above list.  The Fall 2006 issue of the AAPC newsletter had adolescence as its theme:

This topic hasn't been current since last June, so I'm bumping it for the newer members with older kids.

Norway mom..you rock!

I am going through this with Sean, now. Also, even though Colin is ten and has toddler tendencies, he is facinated with..um..girl and boy parts. He won't leave his alone. I keep telling him to put it back in his pants. He keeps looking at me as if to say, "um, why..it's mine".

Thanks for the help!

Kelly

I really appreciate this resource, my son is almost 13 and we have been trying to talk through puberty and also trying to keep in mind that his hormones might be causing some of his actions.

Luckily, he is not always grabbing his privates anymore (he use to hang on to that thing all day long it seemed) but he still doesn't understand that he needs a towel on when he comes out of the shower.  But, just the other day he locked the door to the bathroom while he was showering, maybe that is a sign of good things to come...  At least I hope so.

This post should definitely stay towards the top.

Wow, I hit the jackpot today.  This website has free visual aids for teaching on a variety of puberty-related themes, including menstruation, wet dreams, and more.

Here's a book called "The Guide to Dating for Teenagers with Asperger Syndrome" by Jennifer Uhlenkamp.  I haven't read it, so this is just for information, not an endorsement.
